The smart traffic sign is equipped with sensors that collect data on weather and traffic conditions, a control unit that processes this data to determine the safest speed, and a variable message sign that displays that speed as a recommended speed. The recommended speed is adjusted in accordance with the artificial intelligence’s decision, based on weather and traffic conditions, without the participation or assistance of a human.
The primary application is for road sections where frequent changes in weather conditions are expressed.
Sensors that collect data from the environment:
- The visibility measurement sensor uses the principle of “forward scatter” measurement to obtain accurate and reliable data.
- The wind speed sensor measures wind speed and direction by timing the ultrasound signal from one transducer to the other.
- An adhesion coefficient sensor based on a camera and a laser measures road parameters and, based on the detected condition of the road surface, determines the adhesion coefficient.
- The traffic jam sensor detects the passage of each vehicle in the traffic lane and monitors its speed. Within a given time interval, the sensor detects the passage of a certain number of vehicles at a speed below the set speed limit, triggering the event “Queue Detected.”
Control Center
Smart traffic signs collect weather and traffic data that are very valuable to road authorities. As a significant additional benefit, there is the option to connect this sign to the Control Center web-based portal.
This provides additional information for winter maintenance service. Also, processed data can be a good basis for decision-making about installing additional signalization or traffic regulation.
The control unit
The control unit continuously monitors and analyzes sensor data, processes them using an algorithm, and makes a decision about the recommended speed. The unit consists of a processor with specialized data-processing software and a GPRS communication module. The control unit uses a fuzzy decision-making system to determine the safest speed. The speed the sign displays depends on the combination of sensor values.

Power supply
The smart traffic sign power supply options are 220 VAC or 12 VDC. In areas without an electricity network, a solar package is the best option. Low power consumption makes it suitable for a solar package power supply. Sign monitors battery voltage and can send a notification when the voltage drops below a defined threshold.
The Variable Message Sign
informs traffic participants of the recommended speed. The sign shows the recommended speed range of 40 to 80 kilometers per hour, with steps of 10 km. The sign is made in accordance with standard EN 12966.
