Signs with Illumination
Signs with LED illumination within the tunnel assist evacuation in the event of an accident.
They are a key element of the tunnel’s safety system. Unlike standard retroreflective signs, these devices emit their own active light.
This means drivers do not need an external light source (such as car headlights) to perceive the message on the sign clearly.
This characteristic is crucial when a vehicle in a tunnel stops or when the main power supply in the tunnel is cut off. In the event of fire or the appearance of smoke in the tunnel, internal illuminated signs remain visible significantly longer than ordinary ones.
Resistance to aggressive environments
The housing is made of Aluminum AlMg3 or stainless steel, powder-coated and resistant to pollution, dust, and water. IP protection level IP66.

Possibility of management and monitoring
These signs can be managed and monitored from the tunnel control center via Ethernet, RS485, or digital inputs. When connected to the tunnel control system, the tunnel management staff can obtain information on device status, internal temperature, LED errors, LED board errors, and sign operation mode.
Depending on the sign design, there are several possible operating modes:
- The sign is off
- The sign is constantly on with a specified luminance level (luminance control, from 0% to 100%)
- Flashers on the sign are activated
- When the SOS system is activated (fire or a high carbon dioxide level is detected), the LED lamp at the bottom of the sign turns on to illuminate the sidewalk, making this emergency sign an additional source of lighting in the tunnel.
Highest optical classes
The good visibility of these signs in the tunnel is key to their functionality.
DMV has made an effort to achieve the highest class for luminance (L3) and luminance uniformity (U3) in accordance with EN12899, using very low LED currents.
