Urban Cycling VMS

Urban bicycle systems are designed for installation on bicycle lanes and roadways with significant cyclist traffic. The system enables accurate collection and analysis of traffic data to improve safety and support infrastructure planning.

All collected data is available through a web-based platform in both tabular and graphical formats, allowing city authorities to continuously monitor and analyze traffic flows. The integrated sensor system, in addition to counting cyclists, is capable of detecting and counting pedestrians and e-scooters, providing a comprehensive overview of micromobility in urban environments.

The Urban Bicycle System is one of the modules of the DMV software platform, developed to support the implementation of smart mobility concepts in cities, with the goal of increasing road user safety and reducing traffic congestion.

Our Solutions

Each system can operate independently or as part of an integrated smart mobility platform.

Our solutions for urban environments include two complementary systems:

1.

Bicycle Counter System – for traffic monitoring and data analytics

2.

Cyclist Warning System (CYAWS) – for active safety at conflict zones

Bicycle Counter System

The Bicycle Counter System collects precise traffic data to support infrastructure planning, safety improvements, and mobility analysis.

Available models:

  • Pole-mounted counter – CY-COU-P
  • Standalone totem counter – CY-COU-T

Counters can be single-sided or multi-sided.

Cyclist Warning System (CYAWS)

The Cyclist Warning System is designed for locations where bicycle paths intersect with roadways. It detects approaching cyclists and instantly activates warnings on variable message traffic signs to alert drivers, reducing the risk of collisions. Scenario duration is configurable to ensure safe passage through the intersection zone.

Shared Features for Both Systems

  • Depending on the sensor type, all devices can detect and count:
    • Cyclists
    • Pedestrians
    • E-scooters
  • Power supply options: solar, public lighting connection, or direct electrical grid
  • Appearance and design can be customized according to customer requirements, traffic conditions, or urban aesthetics; existing designs are available for quick deployment, while bespoke solutions can be developed to meet specific needs
  • Environmental measurements include outdoor temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, PM particle levels, and noise levels
  • Automatic notifications alert users in case of device malfunction or communication loss
  • Device status monitoring provides an overview of online/offline status, main hardware components, internal temperature, LED panel errors, reset counters, and other technical parameters
  • Citywide statistical overview consolidates data from all counters in the city, including current and previous day counts, annual totals, and last update timestamps

Variable Message Signs and Control Unit

Signs are manufactured according to EN 12966 standards, with high visibility and durability. Key features include:

  • Powder-coated aluminum housing, IP56 (P3) protection, operating temperature range –40°C to +60°C
  • Optical performance classes: L3 luminance, R3 contrast, C2 color, beam width B6 or B7
  • Low LED current for each color, ensuring low energy consumption and long lifespan

The control unit (CYAW-CBOX) manages detection inputs, activates warning scenarios, and transmits all collected data to the City Control Center for monitoring and analysis. Reaction time between detection and activation is instantaneous, and scenario duration is configurable to cover the entire crossing zone safely.
