Ice Detection Solution

The warning system for encountering a section of the road where ice has formed alerts drivers to adjust their speed, thereby increasing road safety.

The system consists of a sensor that collects data on road conditions, a datalogger that processes the collected data and forwards it, and variable traffic signs that are activated based on the datalogger’s output.

RCSHY is a pole- or wall-mounted laser sensor that detects ice by measuring the pavement adhesion coefficient, which is determined from light refraction in the pavement.

Datalogger – processes the data collected by the sensors and forwards them to the display.

Variable traffic sign (VMS)

serves to activate the display and inform drivers about the condition of the roadway.

The sign can be a matrix, on which various pictograms and text messages can be displayed, or predefined, with predefined displays that can be activated. Display specifications comply with EN12966.

Communication

Depending on the needs and limitations of the location, different communication methods can be used:

1. Wired communication: Serial RS485, Digital I/O, Ethernet…
2. RF wireless communication
3. Cloud communication

The system can be powered by solar energy, enabling complete autonomy and installation in locations where other power sources are not available.

Control Center

Smart traffic signs collect weather and traffic data that are very valuable to road authorities. As a significant additional benefit, there is the option to connect this sign to the Control Center web-based portal.

This provides additional information for winter maintenance service. Also, processed data can be a good basis for decision-making about installing additional signalization or traffic regulation.
