The Road Flood Warning System

The Road Flood Warning System gathers and processes data on roadway water levels and automatically activates devices that warn drivers when a flood is detected. The system is designed for use on open roads and in tunnels.

System advantages:

  • Automatic self-cleaning via compressed air, which eliminates clogging that is characteristic of immersion sensors.
  • The measuring element does not come into contact with water, which helps resist dirt, mud, and aggressive chemicals.
  • The measuring point is highly resistant to mechanical stress.
  • Reliable functioning under severe conditions, including polluted water, lower temperatures, and surface freezing.
  • Long life cycle thanks to the isolation of sensor components from outside conditions.

Components of the Road Flood Warning System

Sensor (RFWS) for measuring the water level on the roadway is based on the principle of measuring the hydrostatic pressure via a closed air (bubbler) system.

The compressed air, through the measuring tube, transmits information on the height of the “water tower” above the measuring point, while the measuring element remains outside direct contact with the liquid.

Variable message sign which displays predefined pictograms and/or text messages based on water level on the roadway (it is possible to set different displays that will activate based on the water level).

The Control Center (SW-CC) web portal allows users:

  • To see the locations of all signs and sensors encompassed by the system on a map.
  • To see information about flood occurrences on the roadway in real time.
  • To track the status of the hardware of all devices in the system.
  • To download and save historic data: about the flood frequency at a given location, the duration of each detected flood… These data can be exported as a .CSV file.
